Some memories from Jack Wood: Jack remembered when he used to help Jimmie Murray, the shepherd from Boatknowe, before he left school. When the sheep had to be moved, Jack was always there. One day the sheep were being moved to a field across the road, where there was a steep knowe. Jack complained about having to run up the hill after the sheep. Mr Murray told him that he should run up the hill backwards. This way, he wouldn’t get so tired as he would think that he was coming down. Jack also had some wonderful memories of the late Dr Carmichael, who stayed at Barone. He recalled how, one day, he was outside in his garden, when Dr Carmichael gave him a shout. He wanted Jack to help him with something. When Jack got up to Barone, Dr Carmichael told him to get up on the table. Jack did as he was asked, and Dr Carmichael produced a paintbrush and some red paint. He then set to and painted Jack’s bare legs, etc., to show all the veins, arteries, etc. He was having a Red Cross class for ladies and wanted Jack to be his model. |
