Mrs Elizabeth (Bessie) Scott shares some of her memories with us:

Bessie remembers that Clachan Show day was the only day in the year when the children in Dalry got ice cream.  It was THE day in the year in Dalry when everyone joined together to make the day a happy one.  The children all got new “gutties” (gym shoes) for that day.

Another vivid memory that Bessie has is of the Mair brothers who lived at what is now 51 Kirkland Street, Dalry.  Sam, who was 4’11” tall, was a great breeder and exhibitor of bantams, so Clachan Show day was a great day for him.  He used to pile all his boxes of bantams onto a barrow to push down the street. Being the height he was, he couldn’t see over the top of the boxes, so he pushed for maybe fifteen or twenty yards, then put down his barrow, stepped to the side, and looked down the street to see if anything was coming.  Then it was back to the pushing again.  This went on right down the street till he reached the show field!

Bessie also recalls the story of there being a Mulloch ghost.  When some boys from the school had misbehaved, the headmaster, Mr Marchbank, gave them their punishment.  He gave them their choice whether to do extra homework or go up the Mulloch in the dark.  The boys chose to go up the Mulloch in the dark.  They got up near the top, nobody knows what they saw, but they all came running back down and vowed never to go up in the dark again.
