Clachan Show Day Memories Before the war, Clachan Show day was THE day of the year. The parade round the village was always led by the Kirkconnel Pipe Band. Exhibitors came to show at Dalry from all over the country. They even came from Orkney and Shetland to show their poultry at this show. The birds were sent by rail and had to be collected at New Galloway station the day before the show. After the birds had been taken from their boxes and penned up, some of the boys from the village were employed to stay up all night and guard the exhibits. Another big attraction on show day was the sports. There was a schoolboy’s medal which had been presented by Dr Richmond. When the last show was held in 1939, this medal was won by Stewart Good who got to keep it. When the present Clachan Fair started up in 1977, Stewart presented it to be competed for in a Mulloch Race. The first Mulloch race was won by 15 year old Ian McAdam. |
